GUNTUR
Guntur located 64 kilometers from the Bay of Bengal is in Andhra Pradesh
and is the fourth largest city in the state. The city has something of
everything. It is one of the state's learning centers; It has a historical
significance; It is a textile and transport center in the country and is also
of agricultural importance due to the production of cotton and tobacco. The
history of Guntur dates back to the 10th century AD. Find a mention in an
inscription of King Chalukyan, Ammaraja.
The city is believed to have been
ruled by Chalukyas for most of the time, though there is evidence to suggest
that the Nagals also ruled this city for a period of time. Guntur also has an
ancient temple called Agasthyaeswara Sivalayam, which is dedicated to the Lord
Shiva. The temple dates back to the 12th century, has some ancient inscriptions
and is believed to have been built by Agastya
